प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद सिद्धान्त बौद्ध दर्शन का मूल है। इस सिद्धान्त का सरलता से ज्ञान कराने हेतु भगवान् बुद्ध ने भिक्षुओं को अभिधर्मशास्त्र की देशना की थी।
परन्तु समय के साथ ये अभिधर्मदेशनाएँ सारवती होते हुए भी संक्षिप्त होने के कारण, असन्दिग्ध होते हुए भी अनेकार्थक दिखायी देने के कारण, आचार्य वसुबन्धु ने अभिधर्मशास्त्र पर कुछ विशिष्ट कारिकाओं की स्वोपज्ञ भाष्य के साथ रचना की, जो अभिधर्मकोश नाम से विख्यात हुई।
कुछ काल पश्चात ,इस स्वोपज्ञ भाष्य के भी गूढाशय होने के कारण तथा सौगत सिद्धान्तों के दुरवबोध होने के कारण आचार्य यशोमित्र ने भाष्य सहित इस ग्रन्थ पर स्फुटार्था नाम से एक व्याख्या लिखी,जिसमे आचार्य वसुबन्धु द्वारा लिखी सभी कारिकाओं का आवश्यक प्रत्येक अक्षर, प्रत्येक पद तथा वाकय, वादि-प्रतिवादी-मतभेद प्रदर्शन के साथ व्याख्यात हैं।
