जिस पिटक में भिक्षु एवं भिक्षुणियों से सम्बद्ध पालनीय धर्मों का उपदेश संगृहीत है,उसे विनयपिटक कहते हैं। इस पिटक में पांच ग्रंथ हैं। १. महावग्ग, २. चुल्लवग्ग, ३. पाराजिक, ४. पाचित्तिय एवं ५. परिवार। इनमें से यह “महावग्ग” ग्रन्थ हिंदी अनुवाद के साथ विद्वानों के सम्मुख प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है।
