Its importance is, of course and foremost, due to the fact that it deals with a work by Abhinavagupta who-as Bettina Baumer forcefully says in her introduction-is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable.

मूलतः आचार्य शंकर तांत्रिक थे और श्रीविद्यार्णव के रचयिता श्रीविद्यारण्य के अनुसार लोक में प्रचलित तमाम तांत्रिक-पद्धतियां शंकर से बहार नहीं. तांत्रिक प्रयोगों से लोक का कल्याण हो इसीलिए उन्होंने 'प्रपंचसारतंत्र' की रचना की और शंकर शिष्य पदमपाद ने इस पर 'विवरण' लिखा. बाद में श्री लक्ष्मणदेशिक, श्रीराघवभट्ट, श्रीविद्यारण्य तथा श्रीगिरवणेन्द्र सरस्वती जैसे तंत्रज्ञ विद्यानों ने शंकर की तांत्रिक विरासत को और भी समृद्ध किया.
