भारतीय कला और वास्तु के सम्बन्ध में कई इतिहास ग्रन्थ पहले लिखे जा चुके है. फेर्गुसन, स्मिथ, कुमारस्वामी और परसी ब्राउन के लिखे हुए ग्रन्थ विशिष्ट हैं और आज भी उनका सम्मान है. किन्तु अधिकांश वर्णनात्मक है और उनमें कला के अर्थों पर विचार प्रायः नहीं है. उनमें स्थापत्य और शिल्प का विचार अलग-अलग किया गया है. किन्तु भारतीय कला के इस नए इतिहास में विद्वान् लेखक ने स्थापत्य और शिल्प दोनों का संयुक्त अध्ययन किया है जैसे कला निर्माताओं ने अपने ध्यान में उनकी एक साथ कल्पना की थी. बाह्य वर्णन ही नहीं, उसके साथ उनके भीतरी अर्थ पर विचार भी है, जिससे वस्तुतः वे कला-कृतियां अस्तित्व में आई थीं. इनके अतिरिक्त संस्कृत संस्कृत, पाली, प्राकृत अदि भाषाओँ की मूल शब्दावली का भी बहुशः उपयोग है जिससे इस बात का परिचय मिलता है की वास्तु और शिल्प के निर्माता और जनता उन्हें किन नामों से जानते थे.
